For a long time, Fiji Airways was not part of any major airline alliances. However, since 2018, it has been the first Oneworld Connect partner airline and is set to become a full member next year. Based in the South Pacific, this airline can be booked using miles through several Oneworld frequent flyer programs. We've examined the various options...

Fiji Airways Becomes a Oneworld Member

Since 2018, Fiji Airways has been a Oneworld Connect partner airline. Oneworld Connect allows smaller airlines to integrate into the Oneworld alliance as an alternative to full membership. To join the Oneworld Connect program, a new airline must be sponsored by at least three full alliance members. In the case of Fiji Airways, it was four: American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas. For members of these frequent flyer programs, Fiji Airways functions as a full Oneworld member, offering status benefits like lounge access and the ability to earn and redeem miles on Fiji Airways and Fiji Link flights.

As announced in June 2024, Fiji Airways' Oneworld Connect membership will transition to full Oneworld membership next year. Significant changes are also coming to the frequent flyer program. The current program, Tabua Club, will be discontinued, and American Airlines' AAdvantage program will be adopted.

Booking Fiji Airways Award Flights Through the Executive Club

BA Executive Club (Source)

The British Airways Executive Club uses a distance-based award chart, which is advantageous for short and medium-haul flights, though long-haul prices are often less appealing. Here are some example prices for one-way award flights in economy/business class:

  • Nadi – Nuku’alofa, Tonga (540 miles): 6,000/12,500 Avios

  • Nadi – Apia, Samoa (753 miles): 9,000/16,500 Avios

  • Nadi – Honiara, Solomon Islands (1,301 miles): 11,000/22,000 Avios

  • Nadi – Auckland (1,336 miles): 11,000/22,000 Avios

  • Nadi – Los Angeles (5,519 miles): 31,000/92,750 Avios

While Fiji Airways does not impose fuel surcharges, departure taxes from Fiji, such as the current $64 USD, can increase the overall cost. For example, a one-way economy class award flight from Nadi to Nuku’alofa on Tonga costs 6,000 Avios and around $73 USD in taxes and fees. For longer flights, this tax becomes less significant. For instance, a one-way business class flight from Nadi to Los Angeles costs 92,750 Avios and $91 USD in taxes and fees.

The Executive Club is a transfer partner of the American Express Membership Rewards program, with points transferred at a 5:4 ratio. Additionally, Avios can often be purchased at rates as low as 1.20 cents each.

Finding Fiji Airways Award Availability

Fiji Airways award availability can be easily found using the AAdvantage search tool, which is one of the best tools for finding award availability within the Oneworld alliance, including Fiji Airways. Availability found through AAdvantage should also be available through the Executive Club and Asia Miles programs.

Conclusion

Fiji Airways is the largest airline in the South Pacific, offering an extensive route network beyond the region. Award flights with Fiji Airways are easily bookable through several Oneworld frequent flyer programs, with good availability on most routes, both in economy and business class.
