Strategically purchasing points for premium travel can offer excellent value. Finnair Plus has just launched a new promotion on bought Avios, offering a 30-40% discount. This marks the second such promotion since Finnair Plus adopted Avios as its rewards currency.

Promotion on purchased Finnair Plus Avios

Until Sunday, June 16, 2024, Finnair Plus is offering a discount on purchased Avios. The discount varies depending on your status in the Finnair Plus program. Non-elite members receive a 30% discount, Finnair Plus Silver members get a 35% discount, and Finnair Plus Gold members and above receive a 40% discount. The discount applies if you purchase at least 5,000 Avios in a single transaction.

Typically, Finnair charges 2.1 cents (in EUR) per purchased Avios. Without elite status, purchasing 200,000 Avios through this promotion would cost €2,940 (~$3,158), which equates to 1.58 cents (in USD) per Avios.

If eligible for a 40% discount, the rate improves to 1.35 cents (in USD) per Avios.

Is buying Finnair Plus Avios worth it?

Since adopting Avios as its rewards currency, Finnair Plus has revamped its award pricing. Here are the one-way Finnair Plus award redemption rates for travel on Finnair.

While awards include surcharges, they are relatively mild. If your booking includes a connecting flight, surcharges apply only to the most expensive segment.

When booking a connecting flight, Avios are charged separately for each segment, except for flights within Finland and Northern Europe. For instance, a Frankfurt to Helsinki to New York business class award costs 82,500 Avios (20,000 Avios plus 62,500 Avios). Finnair Plus offers an award seat guarantee, ensuring consistent availability when booking in advance.

We made a video review a while ago about the new Finnair business class and it is a fantastic experience I can absolutely recommend:

Finnair Plus also allows redemptions on partner airlines, although the pricing is generally less attractive.

Additionally, you can transfer Avios between the various Avios programs, such as Aer Lingus AerClub, British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, and Qatar Airways Privilege Club, offering more redemption opportunities.

Bottom line

Finnair Plus has launched a promotion on purchased Avios, offering discounts of up to 30% for non-elite members and up to 40% for elite members. This promotion can be worthwhile if you have an immediate use for Avios and also provides an opportunity to earn rewards with other Avios programs, thanks to 1:1 transfer options.
