Hilton is opening further hotels in Iceland

While there are a fair number of points hotels in Reykjavik and its surrounding area, the rest of Iceland has far fewer options. That’s why I’m thrilled about the latest development: a new property set to open in 2025, which I look forward to visiting.

Hilton has announced plans to open two new hotels in Iceland through a franchise agreement with Bohemian Hotels. While one hotel will be in Reykjavik, I find the one planned for the north of Iceland much more intriguing.

The Akureyri Skáld Hotel, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, is expected to open in summer 2025. Located on Hafnarstræti street in the heart of Akureyri, this property will feature 70 guest rooms, “blending modern comforts with a nod to Iceland’s rich cultural heritage.”

The hotel will include a lounge and lobby bar, an all-day dining restaurant with an outdoor courtyard, and a social club concept. Northern Iceland is popular for its proximity to the Diamond Circle and Arctic Circle, known for whale watching and viewing the Northern Lights.

While this may not be a luxury destination in itself, it should be a great option for Hilton Honors members exploring Iceland.

It’s great to see more points hotels in Iceland! I’ve been wanting to return to Iceland for another trip, and some time back, I was planning an itinerary. I aimed to drive around the entire country, including a stop in Akureyri, and noticed the scarcity of hotels. So, it’s always exciting to have more options.

Akureyri even has an airport, with flights from EasyJet, Edelweiss, Icelandair, Transavia, and more. There was even an airline startup based here, but it didn’t succeed.

More generally, it would be nice to see more luxury and/or points properties outside the Reykjavik area. Iceland is a destination you visit for its natural beauty, not for high-end hotels like St. Regis or Four Seasons.

However, you’d think there would be demand for something like a Six Senses property, a brand that emphasizes nature. The only luxury property I know of outside Reykjavik is Deplar Farm, which is extremely expensive.

So, while this new Curio Collection property might not be particularly luxurious, I’m delighted to have another points hotel that’s perfect for exploring Iceland.

Bottom line

In the summer of 2025, a new Hilton Curio Collection property will open in Akureyri, northern Iceland. It’s always nice to have more points redemption options, and I’m excited to check it out.
