This stunning hotel in Johannesburg will be opening soon!

In June 2022, we learned that the Park Hyatt brand would be returning to South Africa with the conversion of an existing property in Johannesburg. Initially, the plan was for the Park Hyatt to open in early 2023. Despite significant delays, it appears that the hotel is now nearing its opening, so I wanted to provide an updated overview.

The Winston Hotel becoming Park Hyatt Johannesburg

The Winston Hotel in Rosebank, Johannesburg, will soon join Hyatt’s portfolio. The hotel is currently undergoing extensive renovations, and once completed, it will be branded as the Park Hyatt Johannesburg. Although this renovation has taken longer than expected, the property is now slated to open as a Park Hyatt in Q3 2024. Reservations are not yet available.

It’s interesting to note how the Park Hyatt brand is making a comeback in Johannesburg. Previously, there was a Park Hyatt Johannesburg, which in 2007 was rebranded as the Hyatt Regency Johannesburg. Now, a new property will carry the Park Hyatt name, though it will be much more boutique in nature.

The renovation is being overseen by Yabu Pushelberg, a design firm known for working on properties like the Park Hyatt New York, Park Hyatt Shenzhen, and Park Hyatt Bangkok. The redesign aims to “revitalize the hotel while celebrating the heritage and craftsmanship of its locale.”

Personally, I find the decor of their other properties to be quite generic, so it’s interesting that this firm was chosen if the goal was to imbue the property with more personality. However, the renderings of the Park Hyatt Johannesburg do look impressive—I particularly like the details in the floors, ceilings, etc. (thanks to khabah on FlyerTalk for sharing these).

Park Hyatt Johannesburg room rendering

The Park Hyatt Johannesburg will have only 31 rooms, all featuring king beds and workstations. The hotel will also include a restaurant with both a dining room and an outdoor terrace, a bar, and event space for up to 60 guests.

With just 31 rooms, this will be the smallest Park Hyatt in the world in terms of the number of keys. While the hotel isn’t bookable yet, it is listed as a Category 5 World of Hyatt property. Once it is bookable, a free night redemption will cost between 17,000 and 23,000 points per night.

My take on the Park Hyatt Johannesburg

I love the concept of this hotel being boutique, with just 31 rooms. Smaller hotels with character, where you can still earn and redeem points, appeal to me much more than the larger 200+ room Park Hyatt properties. I’ll definitely be staying here the next time I visit Johannesburg.

This hotel is clearly undergoing a major transformation, given what it previously looked like.

Room at The Winston Restaurant at The Winston

This looks like it will be among Johannesburg’s best hotels once it opens. Currently, the Saxon Hotel and Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff Johannesburg are probably the city's top properties.

Bottom line

The Park Hyatt Johannesburg is expected to open in late 2024. The Winston, an existing hotel in Johannesburg, is undergoing a full renovation before reopening as a Park Hyatt. With just 31 rooms, it will be the smallest Park Hyatt in the world. Based on the renderings, this is a hotel to look forward to.
