Oman Air Rebrands Boeing 787 First Class into Business “Studio”

Oman Air has historically offered a first class product on only two of its Boeing 787 aircraft, featuring eight seats across two rows. These premium cabins were typically seen on flights between Muscat (MCT) and London (LHR) and occasionally to Bangkok (BKK). However, as of September 9, 2024, Oman Air has rebranded this product, replacing first class with a new offering called Business Studio.

Instead of reconfiguring the aircraft, the airline is marketing Business Studio as a more affordable, yet premium option. CEO Con Korfiatis explained that this change is in response to guest feedback and global market trends, noting the declining demand for first class. The Business Studio retains the same seats with 82” pitch, 23” screens, and privacy doors, while soft services include free Wi-Fi and dine-on-demand, aligning more with business class standards.

Business Studio fares are priced 50-65% higher than typical business class rates, and Oman Air is maintaining this as a separate class available for direct booking. The airline is expected to refine its pricing strategy over time, possibly offering upgrades to drive more revenue. For now, Business Studio passengers have access to the business class lounge, though the fate of the first class lounge remains undecided.

This move is part of Oman Air’s broader financial turnaround strategy, aimed at reducing losses. With the retirement of its A330 fleet and elimination of first class, Oman Air is following the industry trend of focusing on enhanced business class offerings. This year will be pivotal for the airline as it aims to improve its financial performance and join the oneworld alliance.

Conclusion

As of September 2024, Oman Air has replaced first class with Business Studio on its two Boeing 787-9s, offering a premium business class experience on routes between Muscat and London or Bangkok. This shift is part of the airline’s efforts to cut costs and boost profitability by filling more seats at a competitive price.
