Is there a new Park Hyatt coming to Sapporo, Japan?

Plans have just been announced for another Park Hyatt location, and we’re very excited about it. However, patience will be required…

Park Hyatt Sapporo opening in 2029

Hyatt has entered into a management agreement with Heiwa Real Estate Co. Ltd., to open the Park Hyatt Sapporo in 2029. The 157-room property will feature culinary and wellness experiences, an indoor swimming pool, and space for meetings and events.

The hotel will be situated in a mixed-use tower at the intersection of Odori Park and Sapporo Ekimae-dori, the city’s main commercial and business thoroughfare. The hotel will occupy levels 27 through 35, promising great views of the park and city (it’s refreshing to see a development where the hotel is on the top floors rather than the bottom).

Sapporo is the economic and cultural center of Hokkaido Prefecture in northern Japan. It’s the fifth largest city in Japan and is accessible from Tokyo via a 90-minute flight.

This will be the fourth Park Hyatt property in Japan, following the Park Hyatt Kyoto, Park Hyatt Niseko, and Park Hyatt Tokyo. Notably, this hotel will be located not far from the Park Hyatt Niseko, which is in Hokkaido’s most high-end ski resort area.

We’re excited about this Park Hyatt—sort of!

We are actually located in Japan so we’re always excited when new luxury points hotels open up. It’s particularly encouraging to see the growth of international hotel chains in Japan beyond Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.

This new hotel will set a new standard in Sapporo. The city doesn’t just lack luxury hotels; it also has very little presence from international hotel groups, aside from a few limited service properties from Marriott.

While we’re eagerly anticipating this hotel’s opening, we’ll have to be very patient, as the best-case scenario is that the hotel is at least five years away from welcoming its first guests. When hotels are announced this far in advance, it’s a 50/50 chance that they’ll actually open, especially within the expected timeframe.

Projects can sometimes get scrapped due to changes in economic conditions (and Japan’s current economic situation is already challenging). Additionally, it’s common for hotel owners to change the branding of properties before they actually open.

We hope this does indeed become a Park Hyatt, as the brand has a strong presence in Japan. That said, it’s likely that this property won’t open until 2030 or later, as projects like this rarely stay on schedule—even in a country that values punctuality as much as Japan.

Conclusion

A 157-room Park Hyatt is coming to Sapporo, Japan’s fifth largest city. The hotel will be located at the top of a mixed-use building, so it should offer fantastic views. This is an exciting addition to Hyatt’s portfolio, and we can’t wait to stay here if and when it opens.
